ISACA Supports Bellevue Scholarship

Bellevue University recently hosted the ISACA Spring Seminar bringing together virtually and in-person over 100 cybersecurity professionals to receive the latest information related to governance, risk, privacy, and compliance topics. In gratitude for Bellevue’s continual support and to help further the work Bellevue University does in this area, the Omaha ISACA Chapter presented Bellevue University President Mary Hawkins with a $1,500 check to be used toward student scholarships.

Chinese Language Immersion Program

There is a unique opportunity that IUP is offering this summer for Computer Science/Cybersecurity students from across the nation interested in learning the Chinese language and exploring the ample opportunities such skill can give them upon graduation. They are offering a paid summer program that will teach Chinese to its participants. Program highlights are given below. If you are interested, I encourage you to complete and submit an application NLT November 17, 2023very.

  1. A stipend of $6,000 for program and follow-up activity completion.
  2. The program is entirely free for participants, including lodging, travel, and meals.
  3. Application deadline is November 17, 2023.
  4. The 10-week summer program includes online and face-to-face instructions.
  5. Participants must be US citizens or permanent residents.
  6. Fun and exciting cultural activities and experiences.
  7. The program targets current sophomore and junior students but interested freshmen are also encouraged to apply.
  8. Attendance of a conference in Maryland in which all participants will be introduced to various cybersecurity careers requiring proficiency in language and have the opportunity to meet with representatives from the DoD and other federal partner organizations.

How to Apply

To apply for this program, complete the online application. Requirements for admission include the following:

  • Application deadline is November 17, 2023.
  • Must be enrolled in a cybersecurity program at an accredited US-based institution of higher education, with sophomore or junior standing during AY 2023–24. Seriously interested freshmen might also apply. 
  • Preference will be given to applicants with prior knowledge of the Chinese language. 
  • Must be a US citizen or permanent resident.
  • Must commit to completion of both components of the program: the summer camp and the online follow-up activities.

Omaha ISACA Spring Seminar

On April 7th, the ISACA Omaha chapter is hosting its annual spring seminar. This will be held at Bellevue University in the MASB Symposium Room. See the above link for full details, this is a great opportunity to keep up to date on current topics as well as network with local cybersecurity professionals.

Kernelcon is just about here!

If you are in the Omaha area and looking for a great cybersecurity and hacker conference be sure and attend Kernelcon taking place from March 30th to April 2nd. Two days of preconference workshops are followed by a jam-packed agenda. Joe Grand will be the keynote on the first day of the conference. He was formerly a technological juvenile delinquent, member of legendary hacker group L0pht Heavy Industries, co-host of Discovery Channel’s Prototype This, and DEFCON’s original electronic badge designer. He has been creating, exploring, and manipulating electronic systems since the 1980s. The day 2 keynote will be Jen Easterly who is the Director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). Ms. Easterly was nominated by President Biden in April 2021 and unanimously confirmed by the Senate on July 12, 2021. As Director, Ms. Easterly leads CISA’s efforts to understand, manage, and reduce risk to the cyber and physical infrastructure Americans rely on every day.
